Three things to consider to get into a meditative state

The act of spending quiet, uninterrupted time should not be looked at as a burden. Spending at least a few minutes in deep meditation can bring lasting positive benefits in the body and the mind. Think of it as something you look forward to. True meditation has no prerequisites. Once you realize and experience the benefits of meditation, you will enjoy the time spent calming your mind. If you are a beginner, use these tips to help you get started on your inner journey.

1.     Time

The beauty of meditation is that it requires nothing. Well, it requires nothing but willingness and time. So, this is the first step towards meditation: finding time that you can dedicate to yourself. You should pick a time that you can actually relax without a time constrain or external disturbances. Usually, people tend to choose hours of sunrise and sunset. But if these times are not available to you, carve out a time where you can find peace and quietness according to your lifestyle and schedule.

2.     Place

The place you meditate is utterly up to you. Common sense will tell you that you should look for a peaceful spot. Especially if you are a beginner, somewhere with less noise and no distractions will be ideal. This way you are not struggling to keep things out of your head. A park bench at your favorite park, a spot by your local lake, or your own bedroom can work. It really depends on your personality and your ability to tune out external factors that can stimulate your mind.

3.     Posture

Usually, meditation is done in a cross-legged position. But, if you have injuries or you are not comfortable in these postures, choose a posture that you will feel comfortable for extended periods of time. Your posture will determine how much you can focus, without having to constantly figure out how to be comfortable when you start your meditation. The important thing to remember here is to sit in a comfortable position. But also don’t forget that you don’t have to be seated to meditate. Mediation can be active. You can even walk and meditate. So, find out what works best for you.

Meditation is something that must be experienced. So, you can start your practice on your own. Sometimes having an instructor guide you through it can help but, eventually, it is a practice that requires you to focus on yourself. Your mind is a gateway to the universe. That should make you excited to get into meditation. Meditation should be looked at as a positive practice that allows you to practice stillness and learn about yourself. So enjoy and be open to your self-revelations.
